SERVICE TO THE UNIVERSITY

Leadership

Over the years, I have gradually taken on more leadership roles in my department and across the university.

  • Shaping the faculty - I have served on three search committees, and served as chair on one of them.  The most recent search for Global Studies was a line I secured to ameliorate service and teaching loads.

  • Fostering alumni relations - as convenor of the Global Studies Program and as a faculty member in the Sociology and Anthropology Department, I liaise with alumni to discuss fundraising, mentorship, and graduate studies.  I am helping to organize the 10 year reunion banquet in Global Studies, and the 60 year reunion in Sociology.

  • Academic Convenor of the Global Studies Program (2023-2025) - In this capacity, I have instituted an alumni prize, planned the 10 year reunion banquet, established a $25,000 fundraising campaign, and provided administrative and service duties support for faculty.  I am also active in outreach for the program through open houses, welcome teas, and upgrading the website.

Curriculum

I have consistently played a role in shaping undergraduate and graduate education.

  • I have served on the Sociology curriculum committee since 2018.  On this committee, we review syllabi for new classes, changes to syllabi for existing classes, and ensure the quality and consistency of courses are high.

  • As the blended learning ambassador, I not only discuss university plans to convert 30% of courses across the university to hybrid teaching with my colleagues, I also have converted my own classes to become permanently hybrid.

  • In the Global Studies Program, I serve on the Board of Examiners ensuring that the grading practices every year are fair and in compliance with university standards.

  • I am part of the committee that is creating a new MA program in the Political Science department.

  • As one of the inaugural faculty members in the university's honors college, I am pioneering student-led and experiential learning.  Not only have I implemented these new models of teaching in my classes, I also present at conferences, and conduct research on the topic.

Community

I teach, research, and work on issues of diversity, ethics, and legal protections.

  • I helped to draft the code of conduct for both the Department of Sociology and NUS College.

  • I work closely with students, the NUS Care team (the campus-wide office in charge of providing first-responder support to sexual assault victims), and the Office of Student Conduct in my capacity as a member of the Care Team at NUS College.  I also actively supported the creation of a Care Team in Global Studies/Political Science.

  • I teach a course on global ethics and served on the ethics committee in the Department of Southeast Asian Studies and NUS College.

SERVICE TO THE PROFESSION

Editorial Boards

I serve as an editor on numerous journals and book series.

  • Asian Journal of Social Science (2018-present) - I have served as a book editor for the AJSS since 2021.  In this capacity, I seek out reviewers for books and ensure the reviews are of high quality and delivered on time.

  • Sociology Compass (2022-present) - I secure 10 articles each year, find reviewers, and work to ensure a prompt review process.  My section is on crime and deviance, and I have been working hard to seek out articles on underrepresented topics from scholars based in the Global South.  Often this requires extra editorial support for younger, Global South-based colleagues, as I help some package their work for a global audience and work hard to improve readability.

  • Philippine Sociological Review (2022-2024) - As an associate editor, I review articles, and help find reviewers for articles.  I served as a mentor and speaker at the 2022 Writer's Workshop.

  • Women's Studies International Forum (2024-present) - As an editorial board member, I meet with the board bi-annually to discuss ways to improve the journal's visibility and ranking.  We also solicit special issues.

  • Bristol University's Sociology of Diversity Series (2024-present) - We meet annually to discuss ways to promote the series and solicit high impact monographs.

Prizes

I have served on two book prize committees, chairing the most recent one.  I also served on a graduate student paper award committee.

  • Asian Law and Society Association Book Prize (2023) - I served as chair of this committee. We drafted the call, reviewed the monographs, and chose a winner and an honorable mention.

  • Association of Asian Studies, Harry Benda Book Prize (2022) - As a member of this committee, we reviewed a wide number of monographs in many different fields.

  • American Sociological Association, Graduate Student Paper Award (2015) - In this capacity, I reviewed the submission guidelines, received and accepted several papers, and scored the papers.

Committees

I served on several committees, playing a role in coordinating important events.

  • Asian Law and Society Association - I served on the inaugural ALSA conference committee in 2016 when the organization decided to hold its first conference in Singapore.  I served on the conference committee again in 2022 when the event was held in Hanoi, Vietnam.

  • Law and Society Association - I co-coordinate an International Research Collaborative. From 2016 to 2023, we coordinated 12 panels and received US$30,840 to fly participants to the conference.
